Capturing in low-light conditions with smartphones or 360 cameras often necessitates additional supplemental lighting to adequately illuminate spaces for focused images.
Before considering supplemental lighting, first:
- Capture during optimal natural light and turn on permanent or temporary construction lighting. In other words, remember to turn on the lights!
- Walk more slowly in low-light or dark spaces. Smartphones and 360 cameras will automatically adjust exposure for low light. However, the shutter speed will be longer. Minimizing camera movement will help prevent blurred images.
Supplemental lighting may be required in environments where:
- Finished lighting is not installed or unavailable.
- Light is inadequate, with dark shadows or spaces. For example, lights are directed downward, but the objects to capture are installed on the ceiling and are dark.
When the environmental light is not adequate, consider the following light sources.
Lighting Sources
LED light sources provide adequate lighting and can last for a long time. Here is an example of an LED light that can be attached to a hard hat. This is a good solution for providing safety to the worker, but may not sufficiently light spaces for 360 capture.
Other temporary lights include headlamps and cordless lights. Other creative options are wrapping LED light strips around selfie sticks with portable batteries. For any low light conditions, Reconstruct recommends discussing options with our Customer Success Team.
