The Capture App's iPhone/Android Video feature offers a convenient way to create 3D models, floor plans, reality maps, and orthophotos using your smartphone camera. This functionality is suitable for documenting and examining both indoor and outdoor spaces. Including pre-pour concrete slabs, complex MEP systems, underground utility trenches, and in-wall installations.
This feature allows users to benefit from easy-to-use reality capture using a standard smartphone, and serves as a practical alternative for those without access to a 360-degree camera.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Video Feature
- Launch the Capture app, sign in to your account, and select your project & location.
- Once you are in the location you’d like to capture, switch to video mode by tapping on the "Beta iPhone Video" option in the bottom right of the app. This will enable you to use the video feature for capturing your surroundings.
- Now tap on the Video icon to enter video mode.
- Read the feature instructions in the pop-up before getting started to understand the best use case and press “Okay” to continue.
- Select your starting position by dropping the blue pin on your starting location. You can zoom in to find the exact position to drop the pin.
- Tap "Start Capture Now". This will drop the pin and turn your camera on.
- Make sure to activate wide lens mode (0.5x). This configuration captures a broader view, making it easier to include more details in your capture.
- Optional: Enable or disable the Light and Grid Lines features as needed. The light can help brighten poorly lit areas, while grid lines can assist you in keeping consistent framing and alignment throughout the capture process.
- Turn your device to landscape mode. Landscape mode is crucial for capturing a wider field of view, leading to more detailed and comprehensive 3D models.
- Initiate the capture process by tapping the blue circle. Make sure to hold your device steady and move slowly and smoothly to ensure optimal capture quality.
- Conclude the capture by tapping the red square.
- Drop the pin in your ending location and tap “Capture Finished Here”. The app will then process the captured data and start creating the desired 3D model.
- Once finished, you will see your saved capture in the bottom bar. You can tap on the saved capture to view images from previous captures, and verify starting and ending points and the path walked. Note that this information may only be visible after the associated point cloud has finished processing.
- The save icon, by default, indicates the date of capture completion.
- You’ll receive an email confirming your capture has completed uploading and point cloud processing is underway.
Tips and Best Practices
- The video feature is compatible with any smartphone equipped with a built-in camera, so feel free to use it on a variety of devices.
- The video feature is especially useful for captures under 10 minutes or those requiring extra detail, such as pre-pour inspections, in-ground/trench captures, or captures of intricate MEP systems.
- Keep in mind that this video feature does not rely on LIDAR technology.
