To achieve the optimum alignment results, we recommend performing a rough alignment to bring both models in close proximity, then refining that alignment to improve accuracy.
To perform the alignments, we recommend the following workflow (please refer to Alignment Tool for more details on each of the following steps):
- Check the control point list to make sure no old control points are already in use before starting a new alignment. Hide all existing control points to clear the viewer before adding new control points.
- Look for distinctive points of interest in the point cloud.
- Pick foundation corners, door opening corners, bracing crossings, etc..
- Remember that the control points cannot be along one line to prevent inaccurate rotation.
- Pick points that are well distributed over the area of the point cloud.
- Make sure these points are also visible in BIM. Don't pick temporary structures, equipment, etc..
- While placing the To-Align pins: and Reference pins:
- Navigate to the image that best shows the To-Align pin. Modify the opacity of the image and the size of the points in the point cloud so that you can see the points through the image (to make sure the point you are picking in the image refers to an existing point in the point cloud).
- Place the To-Align pin in the desired location on the image. Turn off the To-Align Model and pick the corresponding Reference pin in the Reference Model.
- After picking each control point, make sure to orbit around it in 3D to check if it landed in the correct location.
- Navigate to the image that best shows the To-Align pin. Modify the opacity of the image and the size of the points in the point cloud so that you can see the points through the image (to make sure the point you are picking in the image refers to an existing point in the point cloud).
- Click "Align" and make sure the point cloud is roughly in place. Remember that you can always revert back to the last alignment by clicking on the undo button.
- Add as many additional points as needed to refine the alignment.
- Repeat steps 1-9 until the results are satisfactory.
